About
A thirty-year practice
in quiet observation.
John Unrue has photographed weddings since 1995 — more than a thousand of them, for some of America's oldest families and at some of its most storied addresses.
John Unrue photographs weddings as a journalist photographs the world: with patience, with restraint, and with the kind of attention that only comes from spending three decades behind a camera. He began in 1995. The pictures from those first weddings — Boca Grande, the Gasparilla Inn, the families that summered along the Florida Gulf Coast — have not stopped quietly arriving in living rooms for thirty years.
He has photographed more than one thousand weddings. He has photographed for the DuPont family. He has photographed for President George W. Bush and the Bush family. He has been the resident photographer at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes Orlando since the day it opened. He has photographed a wedding with a fighter-jet flyover ordered by a golf pro on the only request he made. He has photographed three-day Hindu celebrations with fireworks over the lake, with two and three second shooters working alongside him.
The work is not posed. It is remembered.
The pictures John gives back are not a record of what happened. They are a record of how it felt — the half-second between a sentence and a tear, the way a grandfather looked at his hands during the vows, the way the gulf went gold for the last twenty minutes of the ceremony. These are the pictures the family will live with. These are the pictures the family will remember.
John is the only photographer I have ever met who can be invisible in a room of three hundred people and somehow have a photograph from every important moment in it.
A practice, not a business.
John books a small number of weddings each year, all over the country and internationally. He still answers his own phone. The images he delivers are edited by hand. The albums he designs are built by a bindery in Italy. Every photograph on this site represents a real wedding, photographed on location — no AI, no stock, no composites. This is a practice. It always has been.
