John photographs a wedding the way a reporter covers a day: by watching it rather than directing it. There is no shot list worked through between courses, no staged reenactment of the first look, and no second photographer calling for attention from the far side of the aisle. Formal family groupings are made, because families want them and because nobody else is going to gather four generations into one room again, but they are made quickly and then they are finished.
The rest of the day is observed. That approach asks more of a photographer than a list does, since a moment missed is simply gone, and it is the reason the work runs to a small team and available light. Thirty years of doing it this way is thirty years of learning where to stand a beat before something happens.
Where the Work Happens
The bulk of it is Florida: the Gulf coast around Boca Grande and Naples, the Orlando properties at Grande Lakes and the Four Seasons, the Winter Park district around The Alfond Inn and the Racquet Club, horse country at the World Equestrian Center, and the Atlantic formality of Palm Beach.
Scale varies more than the approach does. The same year will hold a multi-day celebration for several hundred guests and an intimate wedding for twelve people around one table, along with mitzvah weekends and destination commissions further afield. A fuller list of venues is on the locations page.
