Boca Grande, Florida

Banyan-canopied, barefoot, the gulf at golden hour.

A barefoot ceremony beneath the banyan trees of Boca Grande, the island John has photographed continuously since 2000.

John has photographed weddings on Boca Grande for a quarter-century, for families whose names you would recognize and many you would not. The island repeats itself, year after year: the banyans, the gulf, the verandahs, the slow procession from beach to club.

This story is one of those weekends. A barefoot ceremony beneath the canopy at golden hour, a dinner under string lights, and the long quiet ride back at the end of the night.

Boca Grande is two miles of island with a small number of places to be married on it, which means the work compounds. John has photographed here continuously since 2000, long enough to know which banyan throws usable shade at four in the afternoon, where the light goes flat, and how long the walk really takes from the club to the beach when the party is in heels and the sand is soft.

That familiarity shows up mostly as absence. There is no scouting hour, no scramble when the ceremony runs late, and no missed frame because the photographer was on the wrong side of the aisle when the wind took the veil.

Island weddings here tend to hold two registers at once. The ceremony may be barefoot under the banyans and the dinner black tie under a tent an hour later, and the photography has to move between the two without changing character.

Gulf light does most of the work. The ceremony hour is warm and low, the hour after is blue and cool, and the difference between them is the whole arc of the evening if you let it be. John photographs into that change rather than lighting against it.

John books a small number of commissions each year.
