A good portrait is less about arrangement than about giving someone enough room to stop performing. Most people arrive at a camera braced for it. The work of the first few minutes is undoing that, and it is mostly a matter of patience and of not filling the silence.
The frames that hold up are rarely the ones made in the first minute. They come later, once the subject has decided the camera is not an event, and they tend to look like the person their family recognizes rather than the one they present to a room.
The candid frames come from a different discipline: anticipation. Knowing the toast is nearly finished and the reaction worth having will happen two seats to the left. Knowing the father of the bride has been holding himself together all afternoon and will not manage it through the first dance.
None of that is luck and none of it can be directed. It is the accumulation of having watched the same sequence of moments at more than a thousand weddings and knowing, a beat early, where to be standing.
